Witch’s Rock Surf Camp

At 45, I realized that I can still do really hard EPIC shit! I can still be challenged, taken out of my comfort zone, learn, grow, and still evolve, which is a damn beautiful thing!!! It is so hard to put into words all the things that this trip did for me personally, professionally, physically, and emotionally. I was like a kid at summer camp…smiling from ear to ear, sore, tired, hungry, and never wanting to stop learning and getting back up on that damn board. The happiness was oozing out of me and I found myself again!

Surfing is so much more than just riding the wave…Being in the ocean, covered in salt, sand, sunshine…Being knocked around constantly, learning to navigate the waves, the wind, the other surfers, trusting your mind and body, learning to let go, learning to just be in the moment. DAMN…it is so good! I could go on forever about this, but I won’t, so I tried to sum it all up in today’s post. I hope you learn, enjoy, and maybe even sign up!

How did you choose this surf camp?

I just started doing the research. I follow a lot of female surfer on Instagram who post about camps, so I started digging there and then of course surf camps started popping up all over my feed. Witch’s Rock literally popped up somehow and then I saved it as a bookmark on my computer, so I wouldn’t let go of this dream. Then I found out a good friend of mine went twice and loved it, so I said, it’s time to just do it.

NEW ME had no idea what to expect, no expectations, no plan…I just booked and wished for the best and it was a beautiful freeing feeling!

Why did you travel solo? Were there other solo surfers?

I honestly cannot remember the last time that I traveled SOLO, but it was the best decision I made for myself and for this chapter in my life. If you have been reading and following me, you know that things have been a little murky. I knew that I needed to escape and take care of me, be selfish, and take this time to find myself, find happiness, and mostly importantly find peace. And I DID, so it was the right decision to do this alone. Of course I was scared, nervous, had no idea what to expect, but it felt good to not know, to not have a plan, to just go and see what the universe would deliver me. I can see and feel the change in me, can you hear it and see it?

My group for the week consisted of mostly solo surfers and a couple of families. It was an eclectic mix, but we were all very similar and the more I got to know them throughout the week, the more I realized how awesome a trip like this is for humans. Most of the solo surfers were there for the same reasons I was. To learn to surf. To escape reality for a week. To heal wounds. To find themselves again. Again, the universe works in mysterious ways. As the trip progressed, you could see a change in all of us. We were more relaxed, tan, salty, exhausted, but happy and always smiling. We let go of the go go go daily grind and embraced our surroundings. Surfing exhausted us and as cheesy as it sounds, was teaching us more than just surfing!

Is it hard to get to?

There are no direct flights, but my overall travel experience was easy, pretty smooth, but a long day start to finish. I flew Delta to Atlanta and then straight into Liberia. First leg is about an hour and the second leg was 4. You then take a shuttle to the camp which is about an hour and thirty minutes. The shuttle is included in the package and you will ride with other surfers both on arrival and departure. If you arrive on a different day, you will have to pay for a taxi, which can cost around $100. I booked my flight a little over a month out and it was around $670 with insurance.

How is the food?

AHHHH…the food…simple, nourishing, delicious and everything different from what I typically eat at home. My body loved it, embraced it, and I enjoyed every single bite. I was happy, but I am not sure if it was a combo of eating every meal in a bikini with sandy feet, salty skin, and mermaid hair…LOL…It was probably a combo!

Here’s the deal…As a “camper”, I received breakfast FREE, all day and every day that I was there. This was a very generous offer and one that I took advantage of, because obviously, I love a good deal, but the breakfast options were DELISH! The menu was HUGE and offered everything from salads, to sushi, to chicken, meat, fish, and all the Costa Rican flavors and dishes. I ate my weight in their fresh fruit (the papaya…OMG), guacamole, rice and beans, and hot sauce. And of course, I had no gut issues, bloating, gurgling, and all those typical “things” we sometimes feel when we eat at home. You know what I’m talking about. And I was ravenous…surfing is no joke and between my walks and surf lessons I was always ready to eat!

The food…The flavors…The staff…NO COMPLAINTS! I had no idea what to expect with the food, but gosh darn I am so glad that it was as good as it was. I miss my outdoor meals staring at the waves…Take me back!

How much does it cost?

What does a typical day look like?

At first, I was worried that I was going to have too much downtime, that I wasn’t surfing enough, what was I going to do with my day…Typical American ready to go go go and rush the whole process and constantly be busy! All of us campers were, but the surf lessons made us chill out and slow down, as well as the Costa Rican lifestyle. Typical me though got into a routine and I loved every single second of it. The beauty of traveling solo was that I could do whatever I wanted and I loved it and embraced it and did what made me happy. It was beautiful!

  • 5:oo AM wake up

  • coffee

  • surf lesson - 75 minutes (start times were either at 6:00 AM, 8:00 AM, or 10:00 AM…would depend on the tides)

  • coffee

  • walk

  • eat

  • downtime - I would typically do work, read, and spend time in the AC to cool down and regroup)

  • walk

  • eat

  • sleep

FINAL REVIEW

As always, I am probably repeating myself, but this was not only one of the best trips that I have taken, but one of the best decisions that I made for myself. I needed this. I deserved this. And I want to do it all over again. I have a very good feeling that I will be back again next year.

I truly have nothing negative to say about this adventure! The camp, the people, the food, my fellow surfers, the weather, the water, the schedule, the downtime, the life lessons…it was as always…ALL THE THINGS that I wanted and needed. As you can tell, I love talking about this, so if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

RANDOM TIDBITS

  • I didn’t wear any makeup the entire trip;

  • I didn’t have a TV in my room and gosh darn it felt good to not watch it;

  • I didn’t have a sip of alcohol and had no desire to even have some;

  • I washed my hair once…Mermaid hair is the BEST!

  • I never wore a regular bra;

  • I lived in a swimsuit, bare feet, suntan lotion, and constantly covered in salt and sand!
